  2. Normans, the Knights of Malta, France and Brian (Since 1814) it
  3. became independent on September 21, 1964.  Malta became a
  4. republic in 1974 and on April 1, 1979 the last British sailors
  5. left the island.  With Malta's approval, Egyptian commandos
  6. stormed a hijacked EgyptAir passenger plane at Valletta airport
  7. on November 23, 1985.  57 died in the battle.  Malta is a
  8. democracy but is nonaligned.                      @
